Characteristics of Powder Coating for Forklifts
The main characteristics of forklift powder coating are as follows.Wear and impact resistance: It has high surface hardness and good toughness, resists scratches and collisions caused by goods, and reduces paint loss and maintenance requirements.
Corrosion and rust resistance: The dense coating isolates moisture, salt spray, and chemicals, protecting the metal substrate from rust.
Strong adhesion: It bonds firmly to steel substrates and provides good coverage at edges and corners, making it less likely to peel under vibration and impact.
Color retention and weather resistance: When used outdoors, it is less prone to fading, gloss loss, and chalking, helping maintain appearance quality.
Environmental friendliness and efficiency: It contains no VOCs, forms a film in a single application, offers high application efficiency, and allows powder recovery.
Functions of Powder Coating for Forklifts
The main functions of forklift powder coating are reflected in the following aspects.1. Protective Function (Core Function)
Wear protection: Forklifts frequently rub against goods, floors, and pallets during operation. The coating can withstand prolonged wear and protect the metal substrate from being worn through.
Impact protection: Collisions are unavoidable during material handling and loading and unloading. The coating combines toughness and hardness, helping absorb impact energy and prevent dents or damage to the substrate.
Rust prevention: It isolates moisture, oxygen, and corrosive media to prevent steel substrates from rusting. This is particularly important in humid, salt spray, or cold-storage environments.
Chemical corrosion resistance: It resists attack from chemicals such as hydraulic oil, lubricating oil, diesel, and cleaning agents, helping maintain coating integrity.
Edge and corner protection: Electrostatic powder spraying enables uniform coating coverage on workpiece edges and corners, helping prevent the common problem of corrosion starting at these areas.
2. Decorative Function
Improved appearance: It provides a smooth, even, and uniformly colored coating, enhancing the overall appearance of the forklift.
Wide range of colors: Various colors, including safety yellow, orange, red, and blue, can be formulated to meet the aesthetic requirements of different brands and customers.
Variety of finishes: High-gloss, matte, sand-textured, and other finishes are available to suit the design styles of different forklift models.
Long-lasting appearance: Good color and gloss retention help prevent fading and gloss loss during long-term use, maintaining an attractive appearance.
Specific Applications of Powder Coating for Forklifts
Which forklift components are primarily coated with forklift powder coating?1. Frames and Structural Components
Frames, chassis, counterweights, and other structural components are the main targets for forklift powder coating. During operation, forklifts are frequently subjected to scratches and collisions caused by goods. The coating must therefore have high hardness and toughness to resist wear and impact. Counterweights are often powder-coated to prevent rust and improve appearance quality.
2. Mast and Forks
The mast is the lifting structure of a forklift, while the forks come into direct contact with goods and are among the components subject to the greatest wear. These parts have extremely high wear-resistance requirements. After curing, powder coatings provide a hard surface that effectively resists friction from goods. Because mast structures are complex, electrostatic powder spraying can provide good coverage of edges, corners, and internal cavities, helping prevent missed areas.
3. Body Panels and Operator Cab
Hoods, overhead guards, mudguards, and other sheet-metal components have high appearance requirements. Powder coatings provide smooth surfaces and a wide range of color options. In terms of application processes, mechanical spraying is often combined with manual touch-up spraying to ensure complete coverage of complex structures. The coating must have good adhesion and weather resistance to prevent fading and gloss loss during long-term outdoor use.
4. Special-Function Components
Battery enclosures on electric forklifts require powder coatings that provide electrical insulation and acid corrosion protection to prevent battery leakage from corroding the metal. Components for cold-storage forklifts require special primer powder coatings to ensure that the coating does not become brittle or peel off in low-temperature environments. For forklifts used in chemical or coastal environments, a two-coat system consisting of epoxy primer powder and polyester topcoat powder can be used. The primer provides rust protection and adhesion, while the topcoat provides weather resistance and appearance quality.
How to Select Powder Coating for Forklifts
When selecting powder coating for forklifts, we may face difficulties in determining which product is suitable. Based on our industry experience, we recommend focusing on the following aspects when selecting forklift powder coating.1. Resin System
Epoxy-polyester hybrid powder coating is the preferred choice because it balances adhesion, corrosion resistance, and weather resistance. Polyester powder coating is suitable for outdoor forklifts because of its good weatherability and color retention. Pure epoxy powder coating is suitable only for indoor applications, as it is prone to chalking outdoors.
2. Balance Between Hardness and Flexibility
Forklifts are subjected to repeated impacts and scratches. The coating must not be excessively hard; otherwise, it may become brittle, crack, or chip at the edges. A pencil hardness of H–2H is recommended, with no cracking at an impact resistance of 50 cm·kg and a cupping value of ≥4–8 mm.
3. Verification of Key Performance Properties
Salt spray resistance: 500–1.200 hours, with corrosion creep from the scribe line of ≤2 mm.
Weather resistance: Xenon lamp aging for 500–2.000 hours, gloss retention ≥80%, and color difference ΔE ≤3.0.
Adhesion: Grade 0 according to the cross-cut test.
Abrasion resistance: Weight loss ≤50 mg after 500 revolutions under a 750 g load.
4. Single-Coat and Two-Coat Systems
A single-coat system is sufficient for conventional indoor forklifts, with a film thickness of 60–100 μm. For highly corrosive environments such as chemical facilities and coastal areas, a two-coat system (epoxy primer powder + polyester topcoat powder) is recommended to extend service life.
5. Matching Curing Conditions
Confirm that the powder's curing window matches the production line's curing oven. The standard curing conditions are 180–200°C for 10–15 minutes. Thick workpieces heat up slowly, so low-temperature curing powder coatings may be considered.
Common Problems with Forklift Powder Coating and Their Solutions
The most common problems encountered when using forklift powder coating are mainly reflected in the following aspects. Based on our industry experience, we propose targeted solutions to help effectively resolve the powder coating problems you encounter.1. Cratering / Pitting
Problem symptoms: Small, circular depressions appear on the coating surface, affecting appearance and corrosion resistance.
Possible causes: Oil and water in compressed air; residual oil or degreasing agents after pretreatment; or powder contamination or the presence of silicone-based substances.
Solutions: Inspect and maintain the oil-water separator; improve pretreatment cleaning to ensure there are no residues; and thoroughly clean the powder supply system when changing colors to prevent powder mixing.
2. Pinholes
Problem symptoms: Small pin-shaped holes appear on the coating surface, often accompanied by reduced gloss.
Possible causes: Rust on the substrate or residual phosphating solution decomposes and releases gas at high temperatures; the powder has absorbed moisture, or the decomposition temperatures of the resin and curing agent are close; or the coating is too thick, preventing gas from escaping.
Solutions: Grind the rusted areas before pretreatment; ensure thorough rinsing after phosphating; and control film thickness to avoid applying an excessively thick coating in a single pass.
3. Poor Adhesion / Peeling
Problem symptoms: The coating does not bond firmly to the substrate and peels off after impact or scratching.
Possible causes: Incomplete degreasing during pretreatment or poor phosphating film quality; insufficient curing; or expired or moisture-affected powder.
Solutions: Strictly control the concentration of the degreasing bath and the quality of phosphating; ensure that the curing temperature and time meet requirements; and store the powder in sealed, dry conditions while following the first-in, first-out principle.
4. Bare Spots in Recessed Areas / Insufficient Powder Deposition
Problem symptoms: The coating is too thin or the substrate remains exposed in complex areas such as internal cavities of forklift frames, rib corners, and curved surfaces of the mast.
Possible causes: The Faraday cage effect causes electrostatic field shielding, making it difficult for powder to enter deep cavities and internal corners; or the spray gun distance or angle is inappropriate.
Solutions: Optimize the hanging fixtures so that the workpiece rotates or tilts during spraying, allowing deep cavities to face the spray gun; manually touch up recessed areas; and adjust the spray gun parameters, reduce conveying air pressure, and increase the spraying distance.
