Types of Transparent Powder Coating

According to the resin system, transparent powder coatings are mainly divided into the following types:
Acrylic Transparent Powder: It offers the best transparency and flowability, with excellent outdoor weather resistance, making it the preferred choice for high-end clear coating applications such as automotive aluminum wheels. In recent years, the industry has focused on addressing the problem of indentation during high-temperature transportation.
Polyester Transparent Powder: It provides balanced overall performance and high cost-effectiveness. It can be further divided into standard outdoor types, super-durable types, and low-temperature curing types. Its transparency is slightly inferior to that of acrylic systems.
Epoxy Transparent Powder: It offers excellent adhesion and chemical resistance but has poor UV resistance and is limited to indoor applications. It is commonly used to protect indoor electroplated parts or polished metal parts.

High-end products can achieve excellent Distinctness of Image (DOI) through formulation design, making reflected images particularly clear. The gloss range can be widely adjusted, from low-gloss matte finishes (approximately 21–38 GU) to high-gloss mirror finishes (85–95 GU or even higher).

It requires extremely high transparency, flowability, and weather resistance, as well as excellent compatibility with the underlying colored coating, to improve the body’s DOI and durability.

(1) High-End Furniture and Office Equipment: Used as a clear topcoat on metal tables and chairs, filing cabinets, storage racks, and other surfaces, preserving the metal texture while providing scratch and wear resistance.

How to Choose Transparent Powder Coating

1. Consider the Application Environment
This is the primary factor determining the resin system, as different systems differ significantly in transparency and weather resistance.
(1) High Weather Resistance Requirements for Outdoor Applications: Acrylic systems are preferred. They offer high transparency, good flowability, and excellent weather resistance, making them the standard choice for high-end outdoor clear coating applications such as automotive aluminum wheels. Some formulations can pass 500 hours of QUV-B 313 accelerated aging testing with a gloss retention rate of ≥80%.
(2) General Outdoor Requirements: Pure polyester systems can be selected. They provide a certain level of weather resistance, but their transparency is slightly inferior to that of acrylic systems.
(3) Indoor Applications: Pure epoxy systems can be selected. They offer good adhesion but poor UV resistance and are prone to yellowing during prolonged outdoor exposure.
2. Consider the Performance Priorities
This is the core value of transparent powder coating and is mainly determined by the resin and filler.
(1) Pursuing Ultimate Transparency and Flowability: Acrylic systems are the best choice. To improve the transparency of polyester systems, acrylic-modified polyester resin technology can be used. Its coating transparency and flowability are superior to those of conventional polyester.
(2) Filler Selection Is Critical: To ensure transparency, special fillers with a refractive index similar to that of the synthetic resin (approximately 1.43–1.48) should be selected rather than ordinary fillers such as barium sulfate, which can reduce transparency.
3. Consider Physical and Chemical Performance Requirements
(1) Hardness and Scratch Resistance: This is a basic requirement for transparent coatings. High-quality products can achieve a pencil hardness of ≥2H. Some formulations can reach 4–5H by adding special hardening agents.
(2) Corrosion and Weather Resistance: Pay attention to the duration of salt spray testing, which is usually required to exceed 500 hours, while high-performance products can exceed 1.000 hours, as well as resistance to water boiling and chemicals, such as resistance to 3% hydrochloric acid and 5% sodium hydroxide.
(3) Special Performance: Some fields have special requirements. For example, coatings used for automotive wheels require resistance to gravel impact.
4. Consider Application and Substrate Compatibility
(1) Curing Conditions: Confirm whether the equipment can meet specific curing requirements. For example, some acrylic transparent powders support low-temperature curing at 160°C/20 minutes, making them suitable for temperature-sensitive substrates or energy-saving requirements. Some high-performance products may require standard high-temperature curing conditions.
(2) Process Window: Transparent powder coatings are extremely sensitive to impurities. Even small contaminants during production and application may cause defects such as craters, requiring higher workshop cleanliness.
(3) Pretreatment: Ensure that the substrate is thoroughly degreased. Phosphating is recommended for ferrous metals, while chromating is recommended for aluminum materials to ensure adhesion and corrosion resistance.
5. Consider Appearance and Decorative Requirements
(1) Gloss: Select high-gloss, matte, or even skin-feel matte finishes (gloss of 21–38 GU) according to requirements.
(2) Fullness: Highly transparent coatings provide high Distinctness of Image (DOI), which can significantly enhance the visual depth and premium appearance of substrates such as metallic paint layers and electroplated layers.

Common Problems and Solutions of Transparent Powder Coating

1. Insufficient Transparency/Coating Haze
The coating appears whitish and insufficiently transparent, making it impossible to clearly display the gloss of the substrate.
Causes:
(1) The refractive index of the resin is too high, and polyester transparent powder inherently has lower transparency than acrylic transparent powder.
(2) Improper filler selection. A mismatch between the refractive index of ordinary fillers and the resin can significantly reduce transparency.
(3) The coating is too thick, or excessive flow agent is added. An addition level exceeding 1.0% can reduce transparency.
Solutions:
(1) When pursuing maximum transparency, prioritize acrylic systems. If using a polyester system, an acrylic-modified polyester technology route can be selected. Adding more than 10% acrylic prepolymer can bring transparency close to that of pure acrylic systems.
(2) Select special transparent fillers with a refractive index similar to that of the resin.
(3) Control the film thickness within the recommended range and strictly control the amount of flow agent within a reasonable range, such as 0.5%–1.0%.
2. Coating Yellowing
The coating exhibits a visibly yellow tone, which is particularly noticeable over white primers.
Causes:
(1) The resin itself has a yellowish hue. Domestic acrylic resins may commonly exhibit this defect due to process control issues.
(2) Excessively high curing temperature or excessively long curing time causes high-temperature oxidation and discoloration of the resin.
(3) Improper selection of UV absorbers, with some types having an inherent yellowish hue.
Solutions:
(1) Select low-color resin, such as transparent coatings with a required Δb value of ≤1.2. For applications with high color requirements, prioritize imported or high-quality acrylic resins.
(2) Precisely control curing temperature and time to avoid over-baking.
(3) Select non-yellowing UV absorbers and combine them with 0.3%–0.5% antioxidants to improve yellowing resistance.
3. Poor Flowability/Orange Peel
The surface exhibits orange-peel-like waves and fails to achieve a mirror-like finish.
Causes:
(1) Poor resin flowability. Polyester transparent powder naturally has weaker flowability than acrylic transparent powder.
(2) The melting point of the curing agent is close to the baking temperature, causing melting and crosslinking to occur simultaneously. The powder does not have enough time to fully level before curing.
(3) Improper selection or insufficient amount of flow agent.
Solutions:
(1) Select resins with high flowability, such as acrylic systems or acrylic-modified polyester.
(2) Select curing agents with melting points significantly lower than the curing temperature to ensure that the melting stage is completed before the crosslinking reaction.
(3) Select special flow agents with high transparency and control the dosage according to the supplier’s recommendations.
4. Indentation During High-Temperature Transportation
The coating develops irreversible dents due to stacking pressure during high-temperature transportation or storage.
Cause: This is a common industry-wide problem with transparent acrylic powder coatings. At relatively high temperatures, such as inside vehicle compartments during summer, the coating has insufficient resistance to stacking pressure, resulting in indentations and seriously affecting the product qualification rate.
Solutions:
(1) Solve the problem from the formulation: Adjust the curing crosslink density by combining acrylic resins with different acid values to improve the coating’s high-temperature indentation resistance.
(2) During transportation: Use cold-chain or constant-temperature transportation during hot seasons, or avoid high-temperature stacking pressure during long-distance transportation.
5. Cratering/Color Contamination Defects
The coating surface develops crater-like defects or contains small colored particles.
Causes:
(1) Cross-contamination: Transparent powder coatings are extremely sensitive to impurities. If production equipment is not thoroughly cleaned, residual colored pigments or impurities can cause defects.
(2) The air supply contains moisture or oil, or the workshop is contaminated by dust.
(3) Poor compatibility between the base coating and transparent coating affects intercoat adhesion or appearance.
Solutions:
(1) Transparent powder coatings should be produced on dedicated production lines and completely isolated from colored powder production to strictly prevent cross-contamination.
(2) Strictly purify compressed air, install oil-water separators, and regularly drain water; maintain workshop cleanliness.
(3) Verify the compatibility between the transparent coating and the base coating before formal production to ensure qualified intercoat adhesion.
