Tips: What should I pay attention to when using talcum powder?

Views:time:2025-06-12

summary:

Talcum powder enhances paint clarity and heat resistance but requires moisture control, anti-settling agents, and polishing adjustments. Proper storage and formulation ensure optimal performance in coatings for diverse applications.

Talcum powder is a versatile additive widely used in paints and coatings to enhance clarity, insulation, and high-temperature resistance. However, its application requires careful consideration of factors such as moisture content, polishing difficulty, settling behavior, and storage conditions. This article outlines key precautions and adjustments needed when using transparent powder in various formulations, ensuring optimal performance and durability in different construction environments.

1. For products containing chemical structure water (i.e. crystal water), please avoid using them in related products that require high-temperature baking during construction (such as baking paint, etc.). Glass-type transparent powder is not subject to this restriction in application and has the characteristics of insulation and high temperature resistance.

After the product containing crystal water is made into paint, the paint liquid has a slight blue phase. When producing paints and coatings for dark substrates, if the construction is too thick, it is easy to turn white. Please use it with other powders, or use it after determining the appropriate addition amount through experiments.

2. Due to the high hardness and smoothness of transparent powder (especially glass-type transparent powder), the paint film is difficult to polish. It is necessary to adjust the formula system, adjust the paint film drying speed, and appropriately increase the cost of the polishing agent.

3. Transparent powder has low oil absorption and anti-settling is relatively difficult. In the coating system, transparent powder precipitates relatively quickly compared to raw materials such as resin, talcum powder, and zinc stearate. Because its specific gravity is greater than that of resin and its oil absorption value is lower, it precipitates quickly, requiring appropriate adjustments to the anti-precipitation system to meet the market's requirements for product anti-precipitation.

4. Transparent powder containing crystal water is easy to lose water and absorb moisture, so its packaging must be moisture-proof and stored in a cool and dry place. The requirements for the product during storage and transportation are also relatively high.

While talcum powder offers significant benefits in coating applications, proper handling and formulation adjustments are crucial to overcoming challenges such as moisture sensitivity, settling, and polishing difficulties. By selecting the right type of transparent powder, optimizing anti-settling agents, and ensuring proper storage, manufacturers can achieve high-quality, durable finishes. Adhering to these guidelines will help maximize the material's advantages while minimizing potential drawbacks in industrial and decorative coatings.
